Songs of my teens

jamiroquai-travelling-without-moving-frontIf you were born in the early 80’s you probably have the same defining songs of your teens as I did.  It is amazing how many one hit wonders there are in the list though, I cannot believe it.  Do not worry i will give you my top5, was going to do the top 10 but as Karl Pilkington said, I cannot be bothered.

For my father the defining songs for him, however not too sure whether it be in hsi teens are groups such as Dire Straits, Simply Red, Duran Duran, Euraser and other miserable music.  Just wanted to clarify that Dire Straits is probably oen of teh top 10 groups of all time, if you do not agree with me then grow up and get old.

So what is it that makes it into my top 5 songs?  Typically it will be memorable emotional events, yes just in case you were asking i will also outline these events.  So here goes:

1) Oasis – She’s Electric: Was a New Years party where I confessed my love for Claire Pike while completely blitzed.  I actually think she wanted me to say it to her however not as drunk as I was.  I never did say it to her sober, maybe I should have grown a pair.  However everything happens for a reason, I would probably  not be married to my lovely wife if she would have said yes.

2) New Radicals – you get what you give: When I was 16 I worked for Alders department stores selling TV’s and Audio equipment, this for me was my first learning sales experience and damn I was good (head falling over now).  It is a bit of a shame that for most of my time there they did not pay commission, however when they did I milked that cow.  Anyway my old manager James Shephard gave the song to me and it brings back memories of  the great times I had selling!!

3) Coolio- Gangsta’s Paradise:  Really for the first commercialized rap record I ever listened too and continue to listen to, it never gets old.  This reminds me of when I was 14 at a school party in Trowbridge and dancing like a complete idiot to this song, I must have thought i was Biggy Smalls reincarnated.

4) Jamiroquai – Cosmic Girl:  The first album I ever bought was Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai.  extra special as I was about 12 years old and it was from my first real pay check.  Still listen to the song now and it reminds me to get off my lazy arse and make a dent in this world.

5) Meat Loaf – Bat out of Hell: 13 years old at Rose Hill School during prep with my 8 person year.  I remember Michael Sainsbury having his head smashed against the wall by James Padden (would not stand up in court over this).  Was so funny as as soon as he stopped he egged James on to do it again.  Anyway we yelled this at the top of our voice as Mr Gurtrude walked out the office.

So that is my top 5 defining songs of my teens.  Let me know any of yours and I will then tell you how naff they are!!
